Hymen restoration is the surgical reconstruction of the hymen — the thin membrane at the vaginal opening — through reapproximation of remaining tissue or, in some cases, creation of a new membrane using surrounding tissue.
The procedure is technically straightforward and takes 30–60 minutes. What matters most about it, more than the technical steps, is the framework of care around it: absolute discretion, non-judgmental consultation, and surgeons who treat the patient's reasons for seeking the procedure as her own — not as a subject for commentary.
Patients seek hymen restoration for a range of reasons. Some are preparing for marriage in cultures where hymenal presence at marriage carries cultural or religious significance. Some are survivors of sexual assault seeking a personal reclamation. Some have other reasons entirely.
At NCSS, hymen restoration is performed by our three female affiliated surgeons — Dr. Bernett, Dr. Castaldo, and Dr. Leong — and by Dr. Nichter and Dr. Horowitz, whose intimate procedure experience includes this work. The consultation is private, unhurried, and free of any pressure to explain your reasons for seeking the procedure.

Preparing for a marriage where hymenal presence carries cultural or religious significance
The most common reason patients seek this procedure. Timing is discussed during consultation to coordinate with your specific circumstances.
Personal reclamation after sexual assault
The procedure is available to survivors as one element of a broader personal recovery process. We do not require disclosure of the specific circumstances that led you to consultation.
Any other personal reason
Your reasons for seeking this procedure are your own. We do not require you to explain them to us.
Realistic understanding of what surgery can and cannot do
The procedure restores the physical membrane. It does not — and cannot — restore any prior sexual experience or physical history. Realistic framing during consultation is essential.
Discretion requirements met by our practice
Our facility model — private consultation suites, one nurse continuity, no patient portal, no photography by NCSS — is well-suited to a procedure where discretion matters.
Adequate time for recovery before the target event
Full healing takes 4–6 weeks. If the procedure is being timed to a specific event, schedule at least 6 weeks in advance to allow full healing.
Not for post-partum vaginal restoration

Three stages, one procedure.
Hymen restoration is a same-day outpatient procedure performed under sedation with local anesthesia, or under general anesthesia depending on patient preference. The technical steps:
Assessment during consultation
The remaining hymenal tissue is assessed to determine which of two techniques is appropriate: reapproximation of remaining tissue (simpler, when adequate tissue remains) or reconstruction using surrounding mucosal tissue (when hymenal tissue is minimal).
Reapproximation technique
Existing hymenal remnants are gently reapproximated with fine dissolvable sutures. Straightforward, effective when tissue is adequate.
Reconstruction technique
When hymenal tissue is minimal, a new membrane is constructed from surrounding vaginal mucosa. Slightly more involved technically; equally effective outcome.
Fine dissolvable sutures
All suturing uses fine dissolvable material. No suture removal required.
Anesthesia choice
Sedation with local, or general anesthesia. Both under physician anesthesia in our AAAHC-accredited operating rooms — no CRNAs.
Discretion at every step
Private consultation suite, one nurse continuity, no photography, no data left on shared systems. Consultation is confidential; the procedure is not documented in any way that would appear on records shared with other providers unless you specifically request otherwise.
The procedure itself typically takes 30–60 minutes. Total facility time is usually 2–3 hours including preparation and recovery.
Two sites. One recovery.
Discharged same day. Mild to moderate discomfort — typically manageable with over-the-counter pain medication. Ice packs and elevation helpful.
Loose clothing only. Sitz baths for hygiene. Return to sedentary work typically at day 2–4.
Progressive return to normal daily activity. Continue avoiding activities that create pressure on the surgical site (cycling, horseback riding, prolonged sitting on hard surfaces).
Return to full exercise once cleared. Full healing typically achieved.
The reconstructed tissue behaves like the surrounding tissue. Result is durable through normal activity and menstruation. First subsequent intercourse or other event will disrupt the reconstruction — this is expected and part of what the procedure is designed to allow.
Your record is your record. Copies of the surgical documentation are provided to you and are not transmitted to any other provider unless you specifically authorize it.
