VASER stands for Vibration Amplification of Sound Energy at Resonance — the ultrasound-assisted approach to liposuction. Rather than mechanically breaking apart fat with a cannula alone, VASER first uses ultrasonic energy to selectively emulsify fat cells, leaving surrounding tissue (blood vessels, nerves, connective tissue, collagen) largely intact. The emulsified fat is then gently aspirated. The result is a more selective, more precise procedure than traditional liposuction — with several practical advantages.
The benefits show up in specific ways: less bleeding and bruising (ultrasound coagulates small vessels), better results in fibrous or dense fat areas (male chest, back, secondary procedures where scar tissue has formed), the ability to achieve high-definition contouring where the underlying muscle definition is revealed, and higher fat viability when the harvested fat will be used for transfer to breast, face, or elsewhere. Not every liposuction case needs VASER — but for cases where any of those factors matter, it's a technology worth having available.

When VASER makes the difference.
VASER is worth considering in specific scenarios — and traditional liposuction is often the right choice for others.
Fibrous or dense fat areas
Male chest, back, upper abdomen, and secondary or revision procedures often involve denser or scar-affected fat that responds better to ultrasound emulsification than to mechanical cannula alone.
High-definition contouring
Where the goal isn't just fat removal but revealing underlying muscle definition (chest, abdomen, arms), VASER's selectivity allows the sculptural work that produces defined contours rather than simply flatter ones.
Fat harvest for transfer
When the fat removed will be used for transfer to breast, face, or elsewhere in the same session, VASER's gentler emulsification preserves fat cell viability better than aggressive mechanical liposuction.
Bleeding-sensitive patients
Patients on certain medications, or those where minimizing bruising and downtime is a priority, may benefit from VASER's reduced bleeding profile.
Large-volume cases
For substantial liposuction volumes, VASER's tissue-preservation benefits become more meaningful.
Realistic expectations
VASER refines and improves liposuction outcomes in the right cases. It doesn't change the fundamentals: it's still contouring, not weight loss, and it still requires stable weight for durable results.
Smoking status matters — and approach varies by surgeon
Every surgeon at NCSS strongly recommends smoking cessation for at least 4–6 weeks pre-operatively. Some of our surgeons, Dr. Nichter among them, will not perform surgery on patients who continue to smoke.

Two-stage technique. One precise result.
VASER adds a targeted emulsification step before aspiration — the key technical difference from traditional liposuction.
Tumescent infiltration
Dilute local anesthetic and epinephrine are infiltrated into the target area first — the same starting step as traditional tumescent liposuction. This provides pain control, vasoconstriction, and separation of fat cells.
Ultrasonic emulsification
A specialized VASER probe is inserted through small incisions and delivers ultrasound energy that selectively emulsifies fat cells while preserving surrounding structures. The tissue 'melts' into a liquid that is then aspirated.
Refined aspiration
Gentle small-cannula aspiration removes the emulsified fat with minimal trauma to surrounding tissue. This is where VASER differs most from traditional liposuction — less mechanical disruption during removal.
Sculpting refinement
For high-definition cases, additional VASER work at the deeper planes reveals underlying muscle contours. This is a specialized technique that requires surgeon experience with the technology.
Combined with traditional liposuction
VASER can be used as the primary approach for a case or combined with traditional cannula liposuction where specific areas call for each.
Combined with fat transfer
When harvested fat will be transferred to breast, face, or elsewhere in the same session, VASER's gentler emulsification is a technical advantage.
Every VASER procedure at NCSS is performed under physician anesthesia — no CRNAs, no exceptions — in our AAAHC-accredited operating rooms.
Comparable to liposuction. Often lighter.
VASER recovery is broadly similar to traditional liposuction — and often somewhat lighter thanks to reduced bruising and tissue trauma.
Discharged same day. Compression garment worn continuously. Some drainage from access sites is normal.
Compression garment continues. Bruising typically lighter than with traditional liposuction due to VASER's vascular coagulation. Most patients return to desk work at day 4–7.
Progressive return to normal activity. Compression garment continues (typically 4–6 weeks total). Light exercise gradually resumed.
Return to full exercise, including cardio and resistance training. Compression garment typically discontinued.
Swelling continues to resolve; the final contour becomes apparent. Definition work (if performed) becomes progressively more visible as swelling settles.
Final aesthetic result.
Results are permanent for the fat removed. Weight stability is essential to maintaining the contour — particularly for definition cases, where weight gain can obscure the underlying sculptural work.
