Dr. Thomas Toohey is a board-certified plastic surgeon whose entire training took place within the University of California system: undergraduate biology at UC Irvine (1984), medical school at UC Irvine School of Medicine (1989), general surgery residency at UC Irvine where he served as Chief Resident, and his plastic and reconstructive surgery residency and fellowship at UC Davis (1996), where he also served as Chief Resident. Additional advanced sub-specialty training followed in face, breast, and body.
He established his Newport Beach practice, Toohey Plastic Surgery, more than two decades ago — and has never moved. His office sits in Suite 100 of 1401 Avocado Avenue, directly beside NCSS in Suite 101, where he has been an affiliated surgeon since 1998. That continuity means his patients' consultations, surgeries, and post-operative visits all happen within a single hallway.
His clinical focus centers on breast surgery — augmentation, reduction, lift, and implant exchange or revision — with parallel expertise in facial rejuvenation (facelift, rhinoplasty, blepharoplasty, brow lift) and body contouring (tummy tuck, liposuction, mommy makeover). He has participated in long-term post-approval clinical research studies on the performance of MemoryShape and MemoryGel breast implants, contributing to the field's understanding of how modern implants behave over time.
Raised in Hawaii and Southern California, Dr. Toohey lives in Newport Beach with his wife Nancy — his childhood sweetheart — and their seven children. He is an avid athlete, speaks Spanish with his patients, and, in his own words, 'truly enjoys the art and craft of plastic surgery.'

Dr. Toohey runs a deliberately old-fashioned practice model: he personally handles every consultation, every operation, every post-operative visit, and every injectable appointment himself. There are no rotating surgical assistants performing your follow-ups. No injectors you meet for the first time on the day of your treatment. No handoff between the person who examined you and the person who operates.
It is a more demanding way to run a plastic surgery practice, and it is one of the reasons Dr. Toohey has become one of the busiest plastic surgeons in Orange County — and one of the reasons his patients return, procedure after procedure, over the course of decades.
He does not advertise. His practice grows almost entirely through word-of-mouth referrals from patients who tell their friends, sisters, and daughters after their own procedures. A surgeon this busy without any marketing at all is the highest compliment those patients can offer.
